Indubitably Dubstep Vol. VII

6 Jan

To my loyal Dub-Minions,

I have returned from the warmth of the south, kicking and screaming all the way back to the frozen tundra I call my home. It has been a while since I have seen all that strange, flaky white substance falling from the sky, but after one glimpse of the madness approaching Southwestern Ontario over the next few months, I think I made a good decision to get my ass back in that parka. I don’t mind though, seeing how so many DJ’s will be coming to melt the snow [and faces] off everyone with half a brain who bought tickets already. 2011 is really starting off with a bang, as there are loads of albums awaiting to be dropped, like Nero’s new album set to be released in the coming month, as well as a slew of sweat-drenched nights in clubs all over the country.

While cruisin’ the south on vacation these past couple weeks, it became painstakingly apparent to me that clubs would rather play the same old garbage night in and night out, sticking to the same boring Top 40 bullshit that people like Ke$ha, Taio Cruz and Justin Beiber have shat on and called ‘home’. Occasionally I would hear a Deadmau5 track (usually the classic, but overplayed ‘Ghosts N Stuff’) or Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP’s ‘We Speak No Americano’ but beyond that people seem to be stuck in a Billboard coma. At about the 5th rendition of B.E.P’s ‘Dirty Bit’ one night, I decided that enough was enough and ventured over to the DJ booth where I began to plead to the DJ to throw on some Dubstep in order to save his and everyone in the club’s souls. He turned to me and said “I can only play music that will make people wanna dance”. He was wrong on so many levels. For one, there were maybe 10 people on the dancefloor, 6 of which looked like they were just waiting for the YMCA song to come on, the others just casually nodding their heads along to what I think was Miley Cyrus’ ‘Party in the U.S.A’. Secondly, how could he even think that by throwing on some down right dirty basslines and heavy drum beats would make people do less dancing than what was already going on? Too enraged to argue any further, I stormed out of the club and ran as quickly as I could to my laptop for some much needed Dubstep-medication. For all of you who have gone through the similar pains as I have, I feel for you and urge you to listen to these filthy tracks if you are in need of some serious earhole treatment. Oh, and I DARE you not to dance dirty to these gems.

Signed Sincerely, Dr. Robotnix

New Avicii Radio Rip + Essential Mix

21 Dec

Sadly, this will probably be my last post of 2010, as I will soon be in the warm bosom of the Caribbean, sippin’ back on rum and trying to move as few muscles as possible. I thought it necessary to go out with a very delectable post, featuring a yet to be released remix by Toronto’s NYE host himself. I can almost guarantee this song will bring in the new year with smiles and sweat on everyone’s face. This track was taken from his recent set he performed on the world-renowned BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix with Pete Tong. I figured why let you get off on a small portion of the mix when I can hook you guys up with the entire thing?? It is packed with so much heat that if you play this from your computer speakers only, they will probably just melt right off. Best use some BIG bass when listening to this.

P.S. If you haven’t already bought your Avicii NYE ticket (what the hell could be taking you so long?) you can easily pick one up through here.

Michael Woods

12 Nov

Dear house music Fans,

Considering the fact that I am a relativea noob in the house and deep-house music genres, I am not fully sure how many people already know of UK born producer/DJ Michael Woods, or already hold him in a high regard.

In any case, I stumbled upon his remix of “Oyster” by Moguai a couple of days ago and instantly fell in love with his sound. By drawing out his songs to exuberant lengths and building his drops from the core up, Woods takes a stranglehold over your life each time one of his tracks pops on.

Since listening to that initial track I have downloaded a slew of his work and have been just as equally impressed with each new find. His ability to remix songs outside of his genre and make them house-tastic is simply remarkable, and it makes him one of the most versatile house DJs in the market. I hope he stays true to his style and keeps pumping out tracks of this caliber for as long as possible.

Indubitably Dubstep

5 Nov

Hello once again to all Worst Guy lovers!

Been a while since my last post on the Beetroots concert review and I felt it necessary to get back in touch with all my EDM family out there. This time, I come to you not with a review of some crazy night, but with what will hopefully be the first (of many) posts exploring the realm of Dubstep; a growing phenomenon hitting clubs around the world and living in your eardrums.

To the fan of definitions, it can be described as a dark, heavily syncopated descendant of UK garage music, hovering around 140 BPM with an EMPHASIS on BASS. But to keep it within the boundaries of this definition is too rigid. Dubstep has a huge variation of sounds and tones that can send you into a beautiful dream-land in the skies, or burrow deep down beneath your ribcage and tear you apart from the inside out (kinda like those baby aliens in Alien, but with more wobble and synth). It has taken the music scene by storm as of recently, with more and more new DJ’s coming onto the scene, and many current DJ’s crossing genres.

Below is a small list of many of my favourite artists in the Dubstep scene today (with some Extra Special Treats to go along!)

In my mind, there is no better way to start off a list containing the best Dubstep artists than with the Lord of the Bass. Lorin Ashton (a.k.a. Bassnectar) is a music virtuoso; combining elements from so many types of music that it is hard to even count them all. Utilizing the fundamental Dubstep sound, the wobbly bassline, Ashton’s style can be best described as eclectic. And when he plays live, there is almost no better place I’d want to be. When he came to the Opera House in Toronto over the summer, there were no missteps in his set as he managed to make every single persons night the best it could possibly be. There was nobody left unsatisfied. (Note: Everyone left the venue with that awkward orgasm face).

These two men from London were tearing up the DnB scene before they decided to make there way into the Dubstep scene. And thank god they spread their talents this way. Since their first Dubstep single, ‘This Way feat. Alana’, back in 2008 (still a commonly played song) they have been hovering right around the top of the charts ever since. Recent collaborations with big name DJ’s like Deadmau5 and Chase & Status have turned Nero into a once obscure DnB group into a household Dubstep phenom.

Okay, you’re probably sick and tired of this blog going on and on about the one they call Skrillex. Well, we just don’t give a fuck and we will always share crazy amounts of love and blogspace with you Sonny. After switching over from being in the post-Hardcore band From First To Last, Sonny started using the moniker Skrillex, released ‘My Name is Skrillex’ and instantaneously exploded onto the scene. It seemed like an overnight occurrence. The next morning, everyone just started talking about this insanely talented kid who combines aspects of Electro-House and Hardcore samples into his music. His most recent accomplishment, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, released by Mau5trap has literally taken over the top 10 charts on Beatport. The whole album is a huge success and an absolute masterpiece by anyone’s standards. Next up is a meeting with the mega-star at Wrongbar on Dec. 1st. I will definitely be there and I recommend you come experience Dubstep like you’ve never heard before.

– Signed Sincerely, Ignacio

Rager Countdown: 18 days. 13 hours. 45 minutes. 33 seconds.

23 Oct

Dear Fellow Cudi Fanatics,

Our long long wait for Man On the Moon II is coming close to its wonderful end. With 18 painstaking days remaining until the album’s scheduled release, Cudi has shown his mercy by blessing us with the entire tracklist of the album, and what looks to be the album cover.

The album is a seamen spewing 17 tracks long, divided into 5 seperate acts, all dotted with additional talent; from Kanye, to Mary J., to Cee Lo Green.  I was honestly a bit skeptical earlier on, as some of the songs he was releasing were kinda iffy sounding and I began to think that he had leaked most of the songs on the album too quickly. Thankfully, the more I listened to the songs, the more I loved them and realized how much additional depth Cudi has now added to his musical repertoire. Also, we now have a shit ton of unreleased songs to look forward to on November 9th.

Without further adieu…the tracklist:

Act 1: The World I Am Ruling

1. Scott Mescudi Vs. The World feat. Cee-Lo (Prod: Emile)
2. REVOFEV (Prod: Plain Pat)

Act 2: A Stronger Trip

Act 3: Party On

7. Ashin’ Kusher (Prod: Chuck English)
8. Erase Me feat. Kanye West (Prod: Jim Jonsin)
9. Wild’n Cuz Im Young (Prod: Plain Pat)

And the Leafers WINNNNNN!

8 Oct

To all my fellow beloved LEAF FANS!

Id like to start off by wishing everyone a happy and healthy start to this new and fantastic NHL season that we have been blessed with. Hockey has returned good friends, and what a better way to kick of this new season than watching the Toronto Maple Leafs bum rape the dancing gay american flag wearing inbreeds that call themselves the Montreal Canadiens. The leafers showed us tonight that there is potential this year, you know, if the only our beloved curse doesn’t come to fuck us and somehow cripple all of our players. But lets not think about such catastrophes this early on in the season and relish tonights marvelous dangle filled victory, with some songs to listen to while re-watching Clark Macarthurs goal over and over again.

GO LEAFS GO!!!!!!!

This is what a Phil Kessel sounds like when hes having sex:

This song is to console dirt Hab fans:

The last song you’d find on Brian Burkes ipod:

The only song that is fit to be played the moment Dion hoists Lord Stanley’s finest:

This is what is what Coltor Orr sounds like:

This song is just fucking sick:

This is what Dada Life does to fucking sick songs:

This was the actual song playing in my apartment when Jordan Eberle dangled his way to his first NHL goal

Wrongbar is in for some BANG!!

29 Sep

Dear Skrillex Fans,

My reporter in the field Jason Brundibar has just informed me that Skrillex himself will be throwing down at Wrongbar in Toronto on December first. For all of you that are instantly shitting your pants, yes i know, the concert gods are indeed smiling on us today. For all of you who are not as excited by this, I HIGHLY suggest you pay the minimal ticket fee and come down to see him. Mark my words, this kid is the real deal and the future of electro music, and after he melts your face you’ll be able to proclaim yourself as one of the proud few who was able to see him at a small venue (which is ALWAYS better).

Dear House Music Fans,

Alex Metric will be gracing the city of Toronto with his house-some presence this fall, when he throws down at Wrongbar on October 23rd. This is a gem of a concert as Alex is a very highly respected house DJ in the UK and most of Europe. He has worked with the likes of Steve Angello of Swedish House Mafia, and has many remixes that have reached #1 status on Hype Machine. He is a well seasoned DJ and producer and this is a golden opportunity to see him at a small venue.

To any of my friends in London, I will be driving in for both these concerts regardless of exams, so if you need a ride give me a shout. Except Sam.

– Signed Sincerely, The Worst Guy

Skrillex & Alex Metric Bangers:

Really Spiro….you made a blog?

15 Sep

Dear my friends, my enemies and everyone else I dont know,

Ya I fucking made a blog, and it’s not gonna be one of those weird I’m gonna talk about stupid shit kinda blogs (cough…Laura Rachel….cough), its gonna be a place for me to post all the songs I hear that I like. If you enjoy the music I usually listen to then this blog is for you, if not then you can eat my pee pee. Otherwise, I will be posting any new songs I or my blockfooted roomate Jason have produced/mixed for your listening entertainment, as well as any reviews of festivals or concerts I visit. Also if I can avoid lawsuits I’ll try and post music that Zilnik has made and occasionally make fun of Sam Rothman when I have nothing better to do. Hopefully I can keep you people listening to good music while giving you that loveable Worst Guy charm that you have all come to deal with.

Signed Sincerely, The Worst Guy
