Introducing Felipe Tampa [Interview+Music]

11 Jan

Dear Brazilian Electro-House Fans,

It is out goal here at The Worst Guy to find artists and producers from around the globe that share the innate ability of destroying peoples eardrums. Most recently, our efforts have opened us to lesser known electronic music culture that exists in Brazil, one that seems to have a handful of talented producers and DJs. The first one that caught my eye was FTampa, a Electro-House producer from the town of Belo Horizonte. Although he has been musically trained since he was a child, the idea and practice of electronic music production didn’t cross his mind until recently. Within 6 months of learning the essentials, Felipe Tampa released his first EP titled HaHa, which was picked up by Beatport. Since then Felipe has gone on a tear, producing a slew of Electro-House bangers. The most impressive aspect to his story is the people who have been following Felipe’s career closely. Following the success of his latest releases, Felipe has been picked up by Big Fish Recordings; a record label that is currently nurturing the creative talents of Porter Robinson, Lazy Rich, and Zedd.

I have been in contact with Felipe for a couple of months now, and had the pleasure of catching up with him over the break. Heres what he had to say:

TWG: Having never been to brazil I’m extremely curious of what the national music scene is like, I know of the women and the beaches but have no clue about what music has been driving brazilian culture. Who were your musical influences growing up, who are they now, and how have they helped u find your sound?

FT: In my opinion, musical culture in Brazil is kind of poor (our music is extremely good but the population, in its major, don’t care abou our really good music). Most people enjoy music with no meaning. My influences always came out (abroad). I like good music, no matter how it is. I used to play in a rock group, so my influences were the ones wich blended rock with some electronic elements. Nowadays, my influence is totally electronic. I get everything is released. And, of course, I keep in touch with rock, jazz, pop etc.

TWG: Recently I have come across a variety of young Brazilian DJs, like dirtyloud, chrizz luvly and yourself and notice a heavier lean towards electro-house and figit-electro genres in the tracks. I’m wondering what the dj scene is like in brazil and if other genres like dubstep and drum and bass are as accepted?

FT: Electro-house is very well accepted in Brazil. You can realize it by the amount of people becoming DJs over here. Here, it does have space for all genres. But, of course, it’s difficult to get a ‘market share’, anywhere in the whole world (as well), playing Dubstep and Drum and Bass.

TWG: DJs now a days are usually either built on a foundation of classical or instrumental music training or they have studied the hardware and software well enough to produce bankable music, I’m wondering how you got started djing/producing and what equipment do you use?

FT: I started by the end of my last band. When we decided to break I got in mind I’d stop playing. But then… I thought: “Why not DO IT alone… by myself?” – And here I am. I currently produce in Cubase, using Massive, Minimoog and these sinths vsts. Maybe I’ll get an Acces Virus for now.

TWG: What is your favorite song of all time, and what has been the most memorable concert you have either attended or performed at?

FT: The Lazy Rich remix of Weapons of Choice is my favorite electro track. I haven’t had my big memorable concert yet, but I hope to get one this year.

TWG: What are your new years resolutions and what can we expect from you in 2011?

FT: I will work hard to make my music better and better. I hope I can overcome myself in every new song that I create. My expectation is to produce a wide variety of different songs.

TWG: Lastly, is there anything you want to say to your fans both around the world and specifically in Canada?

FT: Thank you for believing in me. I promise I will reward everyone with great songs. Cheers and stay connected! =)

Wolfgang Gartner Returns To Canadian Soil

24 Dec

Dear Canadian Wolfgang Fans,

Ill give you a few seconds to calm down and clean up your pants….you stable? ok. What you have just read is indeed correct, Mr. Gartner has FINALLY smartened up and decided to return to the country that loves him the most. The strange thing is that from what ive researched, there seems to be a slight conflict in the dates. The first stop on the tour seems to be the issue, as on his myspace site it says that Wolfgang will be playing @ Stages night club in Kingston, Ontario on January 19th. However, other sources like EL Entertainment, the promotion group that ahs brought the likes of Wolfgang, Deadmau5, The Beetroots, MSTRKRFT & more, has scheduled Wolfgang to play at The New Yorker in London on the same day. Im not sure if this is an actual controversy or another way to rekindle the rivalry between the two schools… any case I will be following this closely and update you as soon as I get new info.

Haligonians & Habs fans need not worry, as the second and third stops on the tour seem to be cemented and uncontraversial. On January 20th, Wolfgang will be be throwing down @ The Palace in Halifax, and the next day (the 21st) he will be destroying La Muzique in Montreal. Unfortunately it seems that no tickets have been posted yet for any of the events, but be sure to check frequently as the moment I find the links for the tickets, they will be posted and tickets will be flying off the shelves.

I Heart Brazil

22 Dec

Dear Electro Lovers,

Apparently down in Brazil there is a lot more going on than most are aware of, besides their fair share of soccer freaks and sensational pieces of ass. It seems that the DJ scene there has got some fucking hairy balls, as both of these green and yellowed DJs have some serious fucking talent. The first one to cross my cursor was Dirtyloud, which is also a surprisingly fitting adjective for the music he has birthed. If Porter Robinson sucked Sindney Sampsons dick and spat his spew into Wolfgang’s asshole, Dirtyloud would be the smelliest floater. Felipe Tampa, the second brazilian beast who has been donkeypunhcing my sanity all damn day, is a pure embodiment of what modern electro-house should sound like. He fist fucks his tracks with a perfect combination of sweeping high tones and fidget heavy basslines, like a Swedish House turkey stuffed with Afrojack and marinated in Skrillex.

If you dont believe me listen for yourself and make sure to keep some toilet paper handy

– Signed Sincerely, The Worst Guy

P.S. look out for an upcoming interview with Felipe Tampa!

HoHoHo…Dada December!

19 Dec

Dear Dada Life,

This christmas marks a very odd occurrence for me, as its the first time I actually sat down and emailed S4nty Klau5, pleading desperately with him to give a deserving boy a much needed christmas present. The present is something essential to the continual existence of my ever-evolving love and appreciation of modern electronic music. It’s something that has been sorely lacking in my region of the world, and needs a definite resurgence . Yes, I am indeed referring to the emptiness of never having had the pleasure to see you boys muck the decks live, in the presence of all who love your music as much as I do.

So, in my infinite knowledge I decided to Cc you the email I sent to Ol’ Nick, hoping that modern technology could move faster than Jesus. To my avail it seems as at least one of you were partly listening, as your December Mixtape was promptly released and it is ABSODERPLY HERPTASTICAL. From first decible to the last, it pretty much sounds like the score to a porno scene involving an orgy between sega genesis, ecstacy, and holiday cheer.

My last hope now is that whichever of you did not send this as my gift, will pitch in and send me my Dada Life Toronto or London concert…..please…..

El Guincho – Bombay [Video+Audio]

19 Dec

This pretty much wins are the most innovative and confusing music video of the year. After watching this a first time, I had to immiditately hit repeat as there is WAYYY too much going on to decipher it properly after one view. Not to mention the constant use of sparklers and titties that distract you heavily from the incredible song that is the basis of the video. My advice is as such, watch the video without thinking and let it all sink in, then watch it a bunch more times and each time focus on the music and images separately. Also, as usual, a quick bowl rip wouldn’t hurt.

P.S. what the fuck is that golden tape launching crossbow device…..whatever it is i want it!

Introducing 99

17 Dec

Dear Music Lovers,

Apparently theres something a little different being sprinkled on the grow ops out west, as a group of a few Vancouver DJs have begun tampering with what they have labelled “Nightmare Electro.” Particularly, Ninetynine has stood out above the rest by creating some monstrously evil original tracks and a couple of derptastic remixes. If you are an electro fan with a preference for heavily ominious basslines, this is definitely an up and comer to keep your eye on. His upcoming Revenge EP will be dropping any day now, so start setting your faces to stun.

Ninetynine – Revenge EP Sampler

We Are Tokyo – Best In Me (Ninetynine’s Nightmare Remix)

Ninetynine – Chernobyl SS

Mr. Oizo – Hun (Ninetynine hertz remix)

Iron Maiden – Fear Is The Key (Ninetynine hertz remix)

Super Pixel! – Bangers (Ninetynine Remix)

Daft Punk’s Triumphant Return

26 Nov

In one week and 4 days, the world will be witnessing the long-awaited revival of Daft Punk; the modern day electro equivalent of The Beatles. Not since their 2005 release of Human After All have we been able to get excited for a new album. But not only does this sound like its turning out to be their most epic album to date, it is being used for the soundtrack of TRON!!!!!! (my bet to win movie of the year). If you haven’t seen the original, and base your complete prior knowledge of TRON to the Family Guy skit, then you have to watch it ASAP. The original was so ahead of its time (maybe a little too ahead, according to some critics) and this one looks to do the same thing. The CGI looks stunning, and all of the battles and race scenes makes you wonder if they actually filmed inside the game. Oh, and Jeff Bridges plays himself in it. Twice. And one of him is a younger version. Ya, fucked up. But what makes this movie a must-see isn’t the cool graphics or a multi-dimensional Jeff Lebowski, its those two helmet-wearing French phenoms that will make you sit on the edge of your seat, with your head rocking back and forth and your mouth wide open.

Daft Punk have already released the tracklist to their TRON Legacy album, as well as a few of the songs on it. Just based on the few early releases from this album I can tell its not gonna be a ‘just for the movie’ type of listen. I highly doubt every song will be a rager, that’s just not what Daft Punk is about. They are really broadening the soundscape of this album, and it will probably be one of those listens that will give you an out-of-body experience, coupled with the intense feeling like your flying a spaceship through the universe, blowing up planets just cuz you can. Hans Zimmer has nothing on these guys.

Oh, and if dropping a huuuuge album for an unbelievable upcoming film isn’t enough good news, they are also planning a worldwide tour for 2011/2012. Expect this tour to be one of the biggest selling tours in recent history.

Below I leave you with the tracklist, as well as some of the already released songs and some massive remixes. Oh and the trailer too, just to hype up the anticipation.

[Unbelievable] Gorillaz Remix

23 Nov

Wow do I have a treat for you. Hugely successful altern-rock band Gorillaz have just released a live BBC Radio cover of the song ‘Crystalised’ by the up-and-coming British band, The XX. This song was one of the biggest hits off The XX’s self-titled debut album, which has garnered international success at blinding speeds. The band released their album August of 2009 and since then have been on a huge international tour, playing at some of the biggest festivals like Bonnaroo and Coachella. It is only fitting that Damon Albarn and his band of cartoon misfits would remix this song, however besides Albarn’s recognizable grisly voice, there is little proof that this is in fact a Gorillaz remake. If you are used to their funky samples and hip-hop style breakbeats, this is a nice change of pace, as the Gorillaz take a more minimalist approach to the song, using few instruments (the xylophone gives the song a nice touch) to give the song a feeling of openness. My suggestion: Grab this and a bag of weed and literally watch yourself drift into unadulterated ecstasy.

Its some sort of Pig-Cart-Mau5!

14 Nov

Dear Mau5heads,

Here is a new mau5 related prayer for you all to worship to. This man is slowly ascending mount ibiza and will soon enter that upper echelon where such lords as Daft Punk & Justice currently reign from on high. This song is pretty much one giant build and im guessing its only a snippet from the full track that will be released on his upcoming album, but nevertheless its just another testicle salivating addition to the already orgasmic repertoire that is “4×4=12.”

All hail Joel Zimmerman.

P.S. Thank you Iganacio for sending me this video that explains the name for the song!

Michael Woods

12 Nov

Dear house music Fans,

Considering the fact that I am a relativea noob in the house and deep-house music genres, I am not fully sure how many people already know of UK born producer/DJ Michael Woods, or already hold him in a high regard.

In any case, I stumbled upon his remix of “Oyster” by Moguai a couple of days ago and instantly fell in love with his sound. By drawing out his songs to exuberant lengths and building his drops from the core up, Woods takes a stranglehold over your life each time one of his tracks pops on.

Since listening to that initial track I have downloaded a slew of his work and have been just as equally impressed with each new find. His ability to remix songs outside of his genre and make them house-tastic is simply remarkable, and it makes him one of the most versatile house DJs in the market. I hope he stays true to his style and keeps pumping out tracks of this caliber for as long as possible.

– Signed Sincerely, The Worst Guy
